Westone 1 True-Fit Earphones

Review: Westone 1 True-Fit Earphones

The Westone 1 True-Fit earphones are the fourth set of consumer headphones produced by Westone. They’re also monumental in that they’re less expensive, at $139. These canal phones combine a light weight design, durability and comfort. Unfortunately, Westone left it at this triplet and didn’t put much into the sound quality, which leaves a bit to be desired.

Unconventionality highlights the Westone 1 True-Fit earphones. This is mainly in consideration of the cable, the wires of which are coated in black rubber, then braided to form a cord. Per Westone, this increases their comfort and durability. The cable is 50 inches long, terminating in a gold-plated L-plug- a choice which is supposed to be more heavy duty than the straight plug. True-Fit Earphones

The Y of the Westone 1 True-Fit earphones has a slider to keep it from tangling. The Westone 1 True-Fit earphones also include the option of inline volume control (it’s an attachment), which would increase the length by 10 inches. Additional accessories encompass the one-fourth inch adapter, a hard-sided zipper case with an inner pocket and a cleaning tool.

The selection of eartips is probably the biggest one we’ve ever seen: Three sizes of tapered rubber ones (S, M, and L), three sets of soft silicone sleeves, one triple flange pair and three foam fittings of different lengths. The Westone 1 True-Fit earphones are really, truly meant to fit.

Extra small and “unique” ears still probably won’t find their match in the kit provided with the Westone 1 True-Fit earphones. Contoured to hug the outer ear and then loop over the top and down the neck, the Westone 1 True-Fit earphones may not provide maximum comfort for everyone, although they are secure. The security is largely due to the fact that they’re smaller and flatter than their predecessor, the Westone 3. You won’t have to worry about them falling out as you’re working out.

Earphones

One reason for the Westone 1 True-Fit earphones’ compact design is the omission of two of the balanced armatures. This is a real blow to the sound quality, probably the biggest reason for the step-down from the Westone 3’s. Since there’s also a significant price difference, we decided to compare them to the Etymotic HF5’s, which are in the same price bracket. Although the middle scales are nice and warm, the Etymotics beat the Westone 1 True-Fit earphones in terms of clarity, balance and the depth of the bass.

The Westone 1 True-Fit earphones fit well and come with some useful accessories, besides seeming to be a durable headset. You can, however, get earphones for the same price that have better sound quality.
